THE TABLE OF SILENCE PROJECT: Public Tribute to 9/11

I just returned from a long trip in Northern California visiting family and friends and even witnessed the birth of a beautiful grandchild. I flew late into JFK on 9/10 and at dawn on 9/11 had the honor of capturing The Table of Silence Project for Jacqulyn Buglisi and all involved. For all of us who were in NYC on that day 10yrs ago, it is a searing memory that we will never forget. I was glad to begin this day of remembrance sharing and being part of this wonderful tribute.

The Table of Silence Project 9/11 represents a symbolic banquet table uniting all of humanity. Through this event we wish to achieve the dual purpose of celebrating and honoring peace, through listening, a united moment of silence – a call for peace in our world.

As the dancers created a peace labyrinth encircling the Revson Fountain, we were invited to join for one minute of silence as they raised their arms to the sky at 8:46 a.m., recalling the moment when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower, the dancers turned their wrists with open palms and extended their arms to the sky for one minute, evoking the simple gesture of universal peace. Choreographer Jacqulyn Buglisi created this site-specific “Ceremonial Event” for 100 dancers, drawn from the New York City dance community, entitled “The Table of Silence Project,” to commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11. Buglisi Dance Theatre is partnering on this project with Dance/NYC and The September Concert. Participants are dancers from Buglisi Dance Theatre, The Juilliard School, the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance, The Ailey School, National Dance Institute, Ballet Hispanico, STEPS on Broadway, and Peridance Capezio Center.

Born Forever – A Modern Ballet

Choreographer Jacqulyn Buglisi, with members of the Buglisi Dance Theatre company, created a new ballet entitled Born Forever, an original dance piece with music inspired by Fame The Musical and its sequel Fame Forever. The ballet, which is composed by Fame composer Steve Margoshes, premiered for an invited audience on Tuesday, March 15 at the Baryshnikov Arts Center.

“Our creative spirit never really dies, and as the song says, maybe we really will live forever,” said producer David De Silva, the man known as “Father Fame” who conceived and produced the classic 1980 MGM film Fame and the two stage musicals inspired by it. “It certainly is something to dance about.”

The Buglisi Dance Theatre’s Benefit Fete d’Amour

As a preview to their 17th anniversary season on February 15-20th, at The Joyce Theater, The Buglisi Dance Theatre performed at the Cultural Services of the French Embassy for the DBT’s benefit ‘Fete ‘d Amour’ on Thursday, December 9th. The celebration of love will unfold this Valentine’s week as DBT performs the world premiere of ‘Letters of Love on Ripped Paper’. The piece is inspired by letters between legendary lovers, such as Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Napoleon and Josephine, and is set to an original score by Daniel Brewbaker.

Buglisi Dance Theatre: Letters of Love on Ripped Paper

On Wednesday, June 16th, I photographed a wonderful preview performance by the Buglisi Dance Theatre, “Letters of Love on Ripped Paper”. It is a work in progress that will premiere in 2011 and was hosted by Ralph Pucci at his beautiful penthouse. The work is based on love letters through the ages; one is from Napoleon to Josephine:

In Gujarat – The Hijras or Eunuchs

The Hijras

In India, Eunuchs or Hijras often describe themselves as a third sex, and refer to themselves as “she. They are tolerated when they show up uninvited at special ceremonies such as births and weddings where they cash in for performing dances and blessings.

They are largely left to their own devices to sustain themselves – which include, dancing, singing and sexual embarrassments of various kinds.

It was not always that way for the Hijras.They used to have a place at court and were generally valued by society.

We were staying at the wonderful Rann Riders resort in Dasada, and its owner Muzahid Malik, suggested we visited Becharaji where hijras frequented its temple.”

I had read William Dalrymple’s City of Djinns: A Year in Delhi, in which he tells the stories of a few hijras in Delhi. I knew of their existence but didn’t know I would get to meet them.They live in a secret world and do not share their stories easily.

We visited the temple and they suggestively and playfully danced for our cameras amidst some wonderful old broken temple statuary.

Buglisi Dance Theatre – Caravaggio Meets Hopper

The next dance performed was “Caravaggio Meets Hopper” which juxtaposes the painters; Italian Caravaggio and American Edward Hopper and is set to a ”musical soundscape,” as the program notes, that includes scores by Nino Rota, Jelly Roll Morton and John Corigliano.

As always , Jacqulyn Buglisi and the company, “explore human relationships that reveal the bold visceral strength, humor and exquisite vulnerabilities of the individual. This physical voice speaks of human greatness and possesses the potential to bring all cultures together, addressing current issues that face humanity today by illuminating the global crisis in the environment, war, peace and the growing concern for the innocent.”

Buglisi Dance Theatre : Open Rehearsal

I am always thrilled to photograph The Buglisi Dance Theatre and especially enjoy the rehearsals where I can experience moments of the creative and interactive process between the company and choreographer, Jacqulyn Buglisi.In reading the program, in anticipation of writing this post, I understood why I feel such an affinity here. Jacqulyn and the company’s work and the words used to describe what she would like the audience to experience could easily be mine. She speaks with an amazing physical voice and I speak with a visual voice but we speak about the same issues; the celebration of the human spirit and its potential to bring all cultures closer together.
