Buglisi Dance Theatre – Caravaggio Meets Hopper

The next dance performed was “Caravaggio Meets Hopper” which  juxtaposes the painters; Italian  Caravaggio and American Edward Hopper and  is set to a ”musical  soundscape,” as the  program notes, that includes scores by Nino Rota, Jelly Roll Morton and John Corigliano.

As always , Jacqulyn Buglisi and the company, “explore human relationships that reveal the bold visceral strength, humor and exquisite vulnerabilities of the individual. This physical voice speaks of human greatness and possesses the potential to bring all cultures together, addressing current issues that face humanity  today by illuminating the global crisis in the environment, war, peace and the growing concern for the innocent.”

It was a wonderful night and performance

my favorite moments are often  during the dress rehearsal where I can  watch a  part of the creative process and make my images of the work.

more to come…

The Wedding of Justine and Nicolo at The Church of S. Nicolo

We all knew the best was yet to come. We had flown from all over the world to share this joyous occasion and we knew it was going to be all we dreamed and more…and it was. Justine was radiant as she stepped out of the car and made her way to the church and  her Uncle Bradley looked resplendent in his uniform. Nicolo looked  handsome and happy as he waited in the church with its golden  frescos on the walls. Everyone was smiling and then the music  and the Mass began…

In Padua-the celebrations continued-Burnside becomes Magni

Padua greeted all of us warmly; we had sunny skies and perfect weather every day. We stayed in hotels across the city-all wonderful. The Burnside and Magni family’s planed cocktail receptions and parties and left time for us  to explore on our  own. Everyone seems to eat pizza, pasta and gelatos every day and are all slim, chic and smiling. It is delightful to wake up here  and pick up my  new Canon 5D Mark 2  and explore its potential.  The women  here ride their bicycles in high heels…

Venice

” This was Venice, the flattering and suspect beauty – this city, half fairy tale and half tourist trap, in whose air the arts once voluptuously blossomed, where composers have been inspired to lulling tones of somniferous eroticism.”  and where we began the romantic  wedding celebration festivities of Justine Burnside and Nicolo Magni.

Buglisi Dance Theatre : Open Rehearsal

I am always thrilled to photograph The Buglisi Dance Theatre and especially enjoy the rehearsals where I can experience moments of the creative and interactive process between the company and choreographer, Jacqulyn Buglisi. In reading the program, in anticipation of writing this post, I understood why I feel such an affinity here. Jacqulyn and the company’s work and the words used to describe what she would like the audience to experience could easily be mine. She speaks with an amazing physical voice and I speak with a visual voice but we speak about the same issues; the celebration of the human spirit and its potential to bring all cultures closer together.

Tibetan Summer Festivals In Kham

Summer is the season of Tibetan festivals when people throughout Qinghai, Sichuan and Yunnan- provinces of China- gather to celebrate old traditions during the long warm days on the high altitude plateau.  These events also have acquired a political sub-text: the continuing struggle between China and its Tibetan minority over cultural identity and religious freedom.

This is a  a quote from Freya Stark – a traveler, explorer, Arabist, woman of letters – on  Arrival ” There is a great moment ,when you see ,however distant, the goal of your wandering. The thing which has been living in your imagination, suddenly becomes a part of the tangible world.”

All my life , I have been drawn to this part of the world .I have been reading every book with Tibet in the tittle since I was a child. Pearl Buck and Rumer Godden were the beginning and now I have an extensive library of travel essays. I concentrate on the early explorers and photographers: Isabella Bird is one of my favorites and Alexandra David Neel and Peter Goullart too.

The Opening Ceremonies were so beautiful, filled with dancers, singers and riders in splendid costumes.

This is relaxation Tibetan style with family and friends – time to honor heroes and horses. The Khampa horsemen . . . and horsewomen . ..will race their horses and at night, the streets of the town

will come alive with more dancing and singing

There were not many tourists or westerners and  we were able to move around and shoot behind the scenes and were invited into tents to drink and eat with everyone. We were welcomed everywhere we went.kham opening ceremonies

In the villages nearby it was a time for socializing , playing pool and shopping. We went to the village jeweler after admiring this Tibetan womans earrings. She immediately took us to a small jewelry stall and we bought rings and hoops earrings.

In another town we stopped by a school and the home of  the local weaver who was weaving yak fibers stretched across the yard  for a tent.

The Watermill Summer Benefit-The Inferno

The Watermill Center Benefit each year is one of the most creative and entertaining  fiestas of the summer. This year the theme was  “The Inferno”.

Robert Wilson has created this haven of the arts in the middle of the Hamptons and has cultivated its grounds like something from a fairy tale. The mix of people, art, fashion  and performance is a delight for the eye and for the camera-and the event was a tremendous success in raising money for the artist residence  programs as well .

Terri Gold: Spotlight Interview on James Robinson Photography Blog

I have an article up on  James Robinson Photography Blog, thanks to James Robinson for his kind invitation to contribute. Find the link to the  interview: Click Here

Terri Gold in India “I am always looking at the Still Points… inspired by a line of poetry by T.S.Elliot. We are still and still moving… I see my work as still points in a turning world.

My work is interpretive in nature. I am looking for the grace notes, for the sense of wonder in our world and in our connections to each other. I feel compelled to make these images. I believe images that share our stories can have a positive impact on our world. We need to experience our common humanity. We all celebrate the same joys, we all bleed the same too…”
